Taylor Lautner has called on Twilight fans to support his decision to take on more challenging roles.

The 19-year old actor will next be seen in Boyz in the Hood’s director John Singleton’s Abduction.

He takes on the role of a teenager who is forced to go on the run after he finds out his parents have been hiding a secret about their past.

Lautner told the Los Angeles Times: “I don’t know why, but I’m always looking to challenge myself as much as possible.

“Plus, I had always been an action fan and been fans of actors like [Matt] Damon and Harrison Ford. What I love about their action movies is that they’re not just action movies. They’re playing a character that goes through an incredible journey.”

Lautner was told by Singleton to watch thrillers with Tom Cruise and Harrison Ford in preparation for the role.

The actor, who plays werewolf Jacob Black in the Twilight movies, added: “I’m just hoping that the fans can support me doing completely different things outside of the franchise. And yeah, I mean, there probably is a lot at stake.

“It definitely crosses my mind, and I would be lying if I said I feel no pressure. But whenever that thought does come in my mind, I try to push it out as quickly as possible. I try and just stay focused on things that I can control.”

Lautner admitted this week that he is sad to have filmed the last installment of the Twilight franchise.

We caught up with Taylor Lautner this weekend at the LA press day for his upcoming movie Abduction. Taylor talked with us about his new action role and, of course, Breaking Dawn. At Abduction’s red-carpet premiere last Thursday night, Taylor promised that the second-to-last installment in the Twilight saga would bring fans to tears. The actor, who has seen several cuts of the film already, admitted that he wasn’t immune to the emotion. In fact, he told us he “definitely” teared up while watching the movie! Stay tuned later this week to check out our full interview with Taylor, where we talk about his costar and rumored real-life girlfriend Lily Collins as well as his impressive stunt work, and watch him in our latest edition of I’m a Huge Fan when it debuts this Wednesday!

PopSugar: I know you said you had the chance to see Breaking Dawn a couple of times and you promised that it’s going to make fans cry. Does that mean you teared up a little bit?

Taylor Lautner: Oh yes! Yeah, of course. It’s an emotional one. You see the same characters we’ve grown to know and love in a completely different light than you’ve seen them before. I mean, it’s still part of the same franchise, but I mean it’s a completely different movie — and I think that’s going to be exciting for fans to see.

PS: Was there a moment during shooting, or on set, where the finality of everything hit you?

TL: Yeah, definitely. The big moment for me was the second-to-last day of filming, because that was my final scene with Kristen and Rob. It was an emotional scene we were filming, so that really didn’t help, but it was tough and it’s a very weird feeling to be done filming.

PS: Now, as I’m sure you know by now, Brad Pitt recently said that Sharkboy and Lavagirl is on high rotation in his house. How surreal is that?

TL: It is! I’m trying to picture Brad Pitt in front of his couch watching Sharkboy and Lavagirl right now. It’s kind of a funny visual. I’m sure it’s because of his kids.

Taylor did an interview with a freelance writer from Cineplex, here’s an excerpt from the interview!

In Breaking Dawn, Jacob falls in love with Bella and Edward’s newborn daughter, Renesmee. That’s a creepy storyline to play out.

“He doesn’t fall in love. He’s a werewolf and the legend is that they imprint on somebody, and he does imprint on her.”

So you’re saying not to judge the species?

“Yeah, definitely not [laughs].”

As a highly paid teen actor, what have you splurged on?

“I recently got the iPad 2. I know it’s not that exciting. My parents have always raised me to be a good saver. The other thing is I’m never home. I’m rarely here. I’m always busy filming.”

You’re too busy to shop?

“It’s true [laughs]. There’s no point in buying something huge and extravagant if you’re never going to be home to enjoy it.”

You seem very centered. Where does the discipline come from?

“Martial arts had a major part to do with the discipline. One of the most important things martial arts taught me was just hard work. You don’t wake up one morning and everything has happened for you; you’ve got to go out and get it and work for it and that’s definitely the case with martial arts and any sports I’ve played and the case with this business.”

When fans shadow you, how do you distance yourself from the attention?

“Sometimes it’s hard. When I’m on set and there’s 600 fans showing up, that’s amazing. It’s amazing to see that kind of support. They’re the reason I’m on that set right then, filming the movie, so it’s really important for me to show them how thankful I am. But sometimes you do just want to have a moment to relax and sit down on the couch and spend time with your friends.”

What do you miss the most about a normal life?

“Theme parks. I love roller coasters, Magic Mountain. I’ve been to Disneyworld, like, seven times. It’s actually really funny because I live in Los Angeles and I’ve never been to Disneyland, but it would be pretty difficult to go now.”

When was the last time you went to a theme park?

“Five years ago.”

Even non-Twihards know that Kristen Stewart is spoken for. When prompted to comment on Bella as a vampire, Taylor Lautner shared his true feelings. “Umm, yeah.” He said, scratching face and looking away. “It’s pretty hot, pretty hot.”

Lautner then talked about how grateful he is for the “Twilight” franchise. But anyway, back to “Abduction.” “So I thank that franchise and everyone involved for the opportunity to make a movie like ‘Abduction.'”

Rotten Tomatoes took a little bit of a different approach when they had the chance to interview Taylor Lautner as he did press for Abduction last week. They of course asked some standard questions about Abduction, but additionally got Taylor to list his top five movies, and got him to spill on what he does when he wants to slip out in public without being recognized.

Braveheart (Mel Gibson, 1995; 79% Tomatometer)

My all time, classic favorites come down to Gladiator and Braveheart. Those are definitely my top two. Braveheart might even get the edge. I’ve seen those movies so many times. I’ve probably seen Braveheart like 10 or 15 times. It’s just, it’s classic; Mel is amazing in it — and I believe he directed it as well, right? Braveheart is absolutely unbelievable, and the ending of that movie is the best part.

Gladiator (Ridley Scott, 2000; 78% Tomatometer)

And then Gladiator, I mean — Russell’s just a stud in that movie. [laughs]

Man on Fire (Tony Scott, 2004; 39% Tomatometer)
This one I am so obsessed with. This is the movie I’ve seen the most out of any movie. I’ve probably seen it 25 or 30 times. Anybody I meet that has not seen this movie, I force them to sit down with me and I show it to them: Man on Fire. I don’t know why; it’s a weird obsession. I just think Denzel [Washington] is great in it and I think Dakota [Fanning] is amazing in it. It’s a brutal one. You know, it’s Denzel out for revenge, and their relationship — Denzel’s and Dakota’s — is so touching. And the ending of that movie is by far the best part, too. Tony Scott is one of my favorite directors. Everything they do together is gold.

Taylor goes on to talk about going out in disguise sometimes:

Do you ever slip out incognito among the fans?
I try. I try. I don’t have the best outfit.

Do you have to wear a disguise?
I mean, you don’t have to — but if you wanna go somewhere really public then maybe you’ll try. I just throw on a hat and sunglasses. I keep it simple.

And you still get spotted?
Yes! When I look in the mirror — I put the hat down, put it really down, with big sunglasses — I don’t think I look anything like myself.

So you don’t recognize yourself, but somebody else does.
Oh yeah. It’s unbelievable. I think I look nothing like myself, but the second I walk out the front door: boom! It’s amazing. It just goes to show the passion that the fans have.

Remember the Speed Painter video? Well, “Star Painter” attended the Abduction Premiere and got his painting signed by Taylor! Taylor was so impressed he took the time to ask where it should be signed, he even made the perfect signature!

We definitely love Valentine’s Day, we hope he does some more comedy. However, we would LOVE to see him in more action films.

Everyone in Abduction was all about wanting to do their own stunts! Taylor was all for it, however he always thought about Lily in the back of his mind.

Simple video of him taking pictures on the carpet, with fans, and signing autographs. Looks like a great night for Abduction! Wish we could have made it to the LA Premiere!

Taylor signing autographs and taking pictures regardless of his personnel telling his fans no pictures!

Next weekend will mark the first time Taylor Lautner’s box office appeal is truly tested. For the past three years the actor has been riding the buzz of the Twilight franchise, and while Robert Pattinson has had solo success outside the series with Water for Elephants and Remember Me, Lautner has only appeared in the ensemble comedy Valentine’s Day.

Riding the Twilight wave all these years has been a wise move as Lautner is now the highest paid teenage actor earning $7.5+ million per movie and has projects set up at Universal and Fox, but the release of Abduction may put an end to that. Or it may not, and we may get an Abduction franchise.

THR recently spoke to Lionsgate president Joe Drake who said he hopes to replicate the Bourne films by spawning an action trilogy.

“I know that Taylor and Lionsgate would both like to see this become a big franchise,” he said. “You know, we think it’s our Bourne. The story is set up where there’s a great character created in this, and so — with success — there’s lots of places we could take this story, for sure,” he added.

“I think we’re gonna get at least 2 or 3 movies out of this,” director John Singleton was quick to continue.

Talk of sequels on the eve of a big release is nothing new and is mainly there to generate buzz, but with Abduction‘s budget only around $40 million turning a profit shouldn’t be too difficult (or will it?). If Launter can attract 12%+ of the Twilight audience he’ll have a new franchise, and his other projects such as Stretch Armstrong at Universal will probably move forward. If not, he’s still got both Breaking Dawn movies, but will probably have to take a pay cut in future.
